Social Justice and Advocacy

February 7, Murray MacAdam, Social Justice and Advocacy consultant for the Diocese of Toronto, was guest speaker at St. Martin's, Pickering. The congregation is developing its mission in Social Justice and heard many opportunities to become involved in community issues that need a strong voice. Thanks to Murray's presentation, parishioners left the services with a new vision of how they can make a real difference, one step at a time.

Baptism of Our Lord
January 10th, 2010

St. Martin’s, a small, friendly parish, exists “to worship God, to minister to the needs of the community and to help all people grow in faith and fellowship as a family of believers”.

All baptised Christians are invited to receive both the bread and the wine at Holy Communion. If you are not comfortable sharing the common cup, you are invited to touch the base of the chalice as the communion minister holds it before you saying, ‘the blood of Christ, shed for you.’ Intinction, or dipping the bread in the wine, is no longer practiced. If you would like to come for a blessing, this is indicated by crossing your arms at the communion rail.

If you are visiting with us, or here for the first time, please sign our guest book and stay for coffee following the Service.

We hope that you will feel at home worshipping at St. Martin’s.

The Holly Bazaar was another successful day. Many visitors found Christmas bargains, good food and fellowship at our 2009 Bazaar. Santa was there for the entire day posing for photos.

The youth represented the church with an entry in the Pickering Santa Claus Parade again this year. Our youth group worked hard on the preparation of the float. Several parishioners came out in support of our youth.

Because baptism is important, candidates or their parents need to examine their intentions seriously. Baptism gives us full membership in the church, so it is closely linked with the church's central act of worship, the Holy Eucharist. God's love and care reaches out to all people whether they are baptized or not. The Church exists as a body of people worshiping God through Jesus Christ. Each member is called to help fulfill God's loving purposes in our world. Baptism and Holy Communion signify the special grace God gives to help form and sustain such a loving, worshipping, witnessing community. Baptism signifies an intention to participate in the special gifts and care God gives through the Church and in witnessing to God's continuing creation and redemption of the world.
